Search Types
Users can choose either ALL, ANY, or PHRASE Search at the top of the search screen.
ALL
The search type ALL will find the exact terms entered in the search box, or closely related terms that NCJRS has identified as synonyms. In order to be returned in the result listing, the record must contain all of the terms entered in the search box. For example, all of the results returned for an ALL search for the terms juvenile delinquency must contain both of the terms juvenile and delinquency. The result listing will be initially ordered based on record relevance, which is determined by search term location, frequency of occurrence, and proximity to one another.
ANY
The search type ANY will find at least one of the terms entered in the search box, or closely related terms that NCJRS has identified as synonyms. In order to be returned in the result listing, the record must contain at least one of the terms entered in the search box. For example, all of the results returned for an ANY search for the terms juvenile delinquency must contain either the term juvenile or delinquency. The result listing will be initially ordered based on record relevance, which is determined by search term location, frequency of occurrence, and proximity to one another.
PHRASE
The search type PHRASE will find the exact terms entered in the search box, or closely related terms that NCJRS has identified as synonyms, in the exact order they are entered. In order to be returned in the result listing, the record must contain the terms entered in the search box in the exact order they are entered. For example, all of the results returned for a PHRASE search for the terms juvenile delinquency must contain both terms in this exact order, juvenile delinquency. The result listing will be initially ordered based on record relevance, which is determined by search term location, frequency of occurrence, and proximity to one another.
